Running Behind Nothing

6 Feb, 2025
Living in Mumbai, catching the train of faith, but literally running to catch a train today. One man was running ahead of me with a graphic shirt that said “NOTHING”. I snapped out internally to really observe this scene from a third person perspective.
In life, we are often running behind Nothing, the vedic texts teach us that this nothing is the cause of our simply passing time and not utilising what we have to its fullest.
āyur harati vai puṁsām
udyann astaṁ ca yann asau
tasyarte yat-kṣaṇo nīta
uttama-śloka-vārtayā [SB 2.3.17]
Both by rising and setting of the sun, we lose a day of our lives, however when we engange in the topics of the all good, Supreme Personality of Godhead, no time is wasted.
Using an iPhone as a door-stopper would certainly not be it’s complete use, similarly using the human form of life simply for attaining the four goals of life ,i.e economic development, religious activities, sense gratification and liberation, would be not the most effective way of utilising it.
The vedas, especially Srimad Bhagavatam, instruct us on The Fifth Goal, love of God [prema pumartho mahan]. The Supreme Lord appeared very recently, only 500 years ago, to very charitably distribute and preach how to attain this goal.
nānudveṣṭi kaliṁ samrāṭ
sāraṅga iva sāra-bhuk
kuśalāny āśu siddhyanti
netarāṇi kṛtāni yat [SB 1.18.7]
In this age of spontaneous and causeless quarrel, we are given the benefits of performing good deeds immediately simply by meditating on them however for the bad acts to take effect, action is required.
Considering this is such a game changer when we take into consideration the time we spent in chasing temporary things that will end with this body like money, fame, position, the list goes on and this list turns to nothing by the influence of time. Simply by diverting our thinking and feeling to the all auspicious passtimes and paraphernalia of God, Krsna, we can free ourselves from all bondage and go back home back to godhead where there are only blissful exchanges of love existing eternally.
The Lord is always eager for us to shift our focus from nothing to him
